A circular hill walk around the headwaters of the Manor Water near Peebles. Distance is about 7.5 miles (12km) with about 700m of ascent. The walking is mostly on grassy upland paths although some off path walking is also required. Although navigation is simplified by being able to follow fences for much of the route, it is recommended that you carry an OS map and compass and are able to use them should visibility be poor. You should also be properly kitted out for Scottish hill walking.
Start from the small parking area at grid ref NT 199 286 on the unclassified road south of Peebles, close to Manorhead Farm. This is a quiet area often overlooked by hill walkers but offers some excellent high level walking on grassy summits.
Strike directly uphill on to Dollar Law (817 m). This is steep and is the hard work of the day. There’s about 450m (1500 feet) of ascent in this section. Make life easier for yourself by avoiding the patches of bracken and stick to the grassy slopes. Distance from the road to the summit is just over 2km, so expect it to take between 1 and 1.5 hours. Once you get higher than the forest, you will be able to follow a fence line all the way to the summit.
From Dollar Law summit turn left to follow the fence for 800m on to the summit of Fifescar Knowe. From this summit head across to Notman Law, either directly in south east direction or by following the fence and doing a couple of dog legs first to the left then to the right. The direct distance is just under 1.5km.
Continue south easterly alongside the fence for just over 1km to reach a coll at NT 193 252. Turn left to walk north east for 500m to reach Greenside Law. Continue north east to descend Greenside Law alongside the fence for about 800m to reach a path/track crossing the hillside.
Turn left on to this path to follow it, initially up hill for a short distance, before contouring round the hillside and then descending into the valley. After about 2.8 km the path crosses a burn via a bridge and brings you out on to the road at the parking area.
