This walk may be rather muddy in places if there has been recent heavy rain. In late Summer it may be rather overgrown with high vegetation. Most of the route uses parts of the core path network.
There is plenty of parking at the hotel. If the main car park is busy there is a less formal car park to the side of the hotel.
From the hotel walk westwards along the paths through the park passing a maintenance yard on your left hand side. Most of the paths round here are waymarked including purple core path arrows which are useful to follow. As you approach the houses at the end of the park, turn right keeping on the purple arrowed core path. Head northwards on this path through woods, with the golf course on your right for just under 1km until you reach a footbridge across the A92.
Cross over the bridge to reach farmland on the opposite of the road. Go straight on in a roughly north west direction for about 2km passing warehouses on your left and farm land on your right. This is Johnny Marshalls Loan, an old coal route. When you reach the River Ore turn right to follow the path along the river bank. In late Summer this path is very overgrown so views of the river can be a bit limited. After about 1.5km the path reaches another footbridge over the river and turns to the right. Don’t turn right until you get to bridge.
After a while the path will start to improve and reaches Hurlburn Cottages after about 3/4km. There is construction work going on in this area at present (July 2016) so there may be some diversions. From the cottages continue straight on in a roughly southward direction for 1km until you reach a footbridge over the A92 and a cycle track.
Cross over the road and turn right. Do not go straight on following the cycle track as this will take you to an industrial estate. After about 600m there are two paths turning to your left (southwards away from the road). Take the second of these paths through the trees of Dunnikier Park. As you walk through the park, you will again see the golf course which you should keep to your right. Once past the golf course you can take right turns on the woodland paths/tracks/road to bring you back to the hotel.
