Longbraes and Raith, Kirkcaldy

A short 3 mile circular route around some of Kirkcaldy’s woodlands using core paths.

Start from the access track into Raith Estate on Dunvegan Avenue, Kirkcaldy – opposite the recycling bins.

As you approach the estate you will see a sign with an arrow pointing to your left away from the big house. Follow this arrow onto a good woodland path. This path leads round the back of the houses for about 1km. There is an alternative rougher path to the right of this main path which you could use if you wished. At the end of the path it bends round to the left to reach the Oriel Road. You could stay on the path and turn right to walk along the pavement for a short distance or you can go straight on, on to a rough path through some fallen trees which brings you out on to Dronachy Road at its junction to the main road.

Whichever way you go, you need to cross over the busy main road and go through a gate on the opposite side (almost opposite Dronachy Road) to pick up a bit of path which quickly improves into a reasonably well surfaced track. Follow this track for about 2km until it reaches Bennochy Road where you turn left to reach Oriel Road.

Crossover Oriel Road (you could use the pedestrian crossing), turn right and look for a path on your left accessed via a stile at a gate. You’ll need to walk on the grass as there is no pavement here.

Once on to the path follow it in to the woods. The path goes round to the right and can be followed until the point where it goes downhill to the left and turns back on itself. Continue onwards now walking in the opposite direction but at a lower level. You will reach an area with a path junction with the backs of houses on your left. At this point you need to take the not so obvious route up the steep banking which quickly becomes another easy to follow path. You will soon arrive back at the entrance to Raith Estate where you started from and can turn left on to the access track to reach the road.
